Specialty Producers Promoted at Value Added Agriculture Day 2022

During South Dakota’s State Fair in Huron, S.D., specialty producers were promoted at the Value Added Agriculture Center Day on Thurs., Sept. 1, 2022.

The Value Added Ag Day tent was filled with agriculture and value added producers, as well as organizations that support those producers.  SDSPA members included Theresa & Donald Fink of Made By Black Ink Farms (Delmont, SD), Michael Gubbles of Good Life Farms (Canton, SD), Grace Freeman & Lori Peterson of Prairie Moon Herbs (Vermillion, SD), Heidi Heikes of Heikes Family Farm (Vermillion, SD) and Cindy Tolle & Tanner Delannoy of Evergreen Ranching & Livestock (Edgemont, SD).

State Fair attendees filled the audience to learn from SDSPA members during their demonstrations in the women’s building kitchen.  Grace Freeman and Lori Peterson of Prairie Moon Herbs showed how they make Savory Crepes with Fresh Herbs.  The audience loved seeing Lori pull petals off various flowers that she then added to the crepes for flavor, and hearing about how these crepes, unlike the more common sweet crepes, can be used in entrees.

In the second demonstration, Tanya Flegel of Flegel’s Flowers and SDSU Nutrition Field Specialists Anna Barr & Claudia Botzet showed how to use South Dakota grown tomatoes, corn, garlic, onion, peppers, cilantro and even local limes to make a fresh salsa.  This demo was enjoyed by all ages, as they went over tips for preparing each vegetable, and then allowed the audience to sample.

At the South Dakota Specialty Producers Booth, attendees could learn about our organization, pick up a postcard with our website information, learn about Farm to School opportunities, grab a temporary tattoo to show their love for Farmers Markets and visitors were challenged to complete the #sdspecialtycropsearch.
