Organic Regenerative Agriculture Pathway Program (O-RAPP) for South Dakota Farmers

The NRCS Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) Organic Transition Initiative (OTI) Organic Management Practice Standard 823 is emerging as an important resource for South Dakota farmers looking to transition to organic farming. Under EQIP, Organic Transition Initiative 823 (OTI) is specifically meant to help those transitioning to certified organic operations. This program provides technical and financial support to farmers. By implementing practices such as cover cropping, crop rotation, low or no till, pollinator habitat, shelter belts, and water conservation, farmers are not only on the pathway to USDA organic certification but also building a foundation for achieving a high bar regenerative organic certification. These dual certifications could potentially unlock premium market opportunities, providing a financial boost to producers committed to sustainable farming.

A key strength of the OTI program lies in its alignment with organic and regenerative practices, which emphasize soil health and land management. Many of the practices required by OTI—such as fostering biodiversity, reducing primary tillage, and improving water management—overlap with regenerative organic standards. These measures contribute to long-term productivity, making farms more resilient to drought, floods, and extreme weather events while meeting the rigorous standards of both USDA NOP. This synergy supports the transition for farmers interested in pursuing both certifications – regenerative and organic.

For South Dakota farmers, adopting these practices through the EQIP OTI program opens doors to diverse ways to receive financial assistance for taking care of the soil and ethical management of crop land and animals. The potential for stacking financial incentives from NRCS and premium market pricing for regenerative organic products makes this a compelling pathway for farmers to boost profitability while transitioning or improving the resilience of their existing organic farming systems.  By accessing financial assistance during the transition period, the OTI program serves as an excellent stepping stone for farmers seeking to innovate and thrive in an evolving agricultural landscape.

Starting in early 2025, SDSPA will offer a new Organic + Regenerative Agriculture Pathway Program (O-RAPP) learning series where producers will gain valuable knowledge about transitioning to organic and regenerative farming practices.
