Producer Feature: Homestake Flower Farm

Between Rapid City and Wall, nestled along the Cheyenne River is Wasta, a friendly little town. SDSPA Urban Ag Liaison, Malisa Niles, was invited to Wasta by Mel Riley, NRCS Soil Conservation Technician to visit an adorable cut flower farm, Homestake Flower Farm, owned by Lisa Rae Siemonsma. It is in its first year and specializes in flower subscriptions, custom orders and hosts a variety of workshops.

Lisa invited Mel and Malisa out to tour her flower farm and get some technical advice about high tunnels. She is interested in a small high tunnel to extend her flower season. Mel explained the NRCS’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and how the first step would be to get registered and assigned a farm number through the Farm Service Agency (FSA).

Mel measured the property and took many pictures of the beautiful operation which she will use to create a conservation plan. She will go over the plan with Lisa which may include cost share opportunities through EQIP. When Mel is done with the plan, they will discuss it and may adjust the plan if needed. EQIP is a competitive opportunity so a good plan is critical. Lisa may choose to use the plan or go another direction. If she decides to use the plan, Lisa may apply for the cost share to assist in purchasing and building the high tunnel.

We set up a timeline, and discussed her flower market stand the next day in Rapid City. It was an absolutely beautiful morning to spend in a field of flowers.
