Soil Health and Cover Crop Field Day September 5th
Do you want to learn more about scaling up vegetable production, incorporating cover crops, and managing soil health? SDSU Extension, South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA), and Blue Sky Vegetable Co. welcome you to Worthing, SD for a Soil Health and Cover Crop Field Day on Thursday, September 5 from 9:00-11:30 a.m. This event is for current and beginning farmers, technical service providers, gardeners, and anyone who would like to learn more about managing cover crops and soil health on a diverse vegetable farm. More information can be found here.
Dirk and Kjersten Oudman will share their experiences growing vegetables in dry, windy, and very wet seasons in South Dakota. In partnership with Kristine Lang of SDSU Extension and Connor Ruen, a M.S. Graduate Research Assistant, they will highlight the good, bad, and “we’re not sure yet” of incorporating clover cover crops as living pathways. Other lessons learned will include how to improve soil health, unique ways to manage fertility, and extending the season with high tunnels and greenhouses. This field day will include a farm tour led by the Oudmans, short presentations by Kristine Lang, Connor Ruen, and Morgan Hughes of SDSPA. Throughout the entire day participants will be encouraged to ask questions and share ideas with each other.
Please watch for signage that will direct visitors to parking upon arrival. This tour will include walking, so please wear appropriate footwear that can get dirty. Pre-registration at extension.sdstate.edu/events is appreciated for an accurate meal count, but walk-in registration will be welcome. If you have questions about this event please contact Kristine Lang, 605-688-5796, kristine.lang@sdstate.edu.
