IronFox Farm Teaches Gardening Skills to Sioux Falls Youth

Students plant tomatoes, peppers, melons, and more at IronFox Farm during summer camp.
SDSPA awarded IronFox Farm one of the $100 field trip stipends, which was established to assist producers in hosting a specialty crop farm tour to connect with youth in their community.
IronFox Farm, a new urban farm in Sioux Falls, SD, is named after its owner/operators, Megan and Dan EisenVos. (Eisen = Iron and Vos = Fox).
IronFox Farm is working with 3rd and 4th grade students at Eugene Field Elementary A+. Each of the five classrooms worked with a 150 square ft. garden plot and received educational gardening lessons before the school year ended. Students involved in their gardening program have access to their garden plot over the summer.

During the 1st summer camp lesson at IronFox Farm, youth learned about the life cycle of a plant and how to plant seeds, and planted their own garden plot.
They are partnering with PEAK Performance in Sioux Falls through a summer camp. Eighteen students enrolled in the camp and visited IronFox Farm on June 10th to learn about the life cycle of a plant, identify requirements for planting seeds, and plant their own garden plot.
Students worked together to plant tomatoes, peppers, melons, squashes, peas, beans, zucchini, herbs, and flowers. They returned to IronFox Farm on June 24th to see what had sprouted and received an in depth lesson on creating and applying compost.
All food grown at IronFox Farm will be available for students to take home with them. If you want to learn more or would like to volunteer for an upcoming event, please visit www.ironfoxfarm.com.
