S.D. Farmers Market Coalition ~ May 2022 Update

At our monthly Zoom meeting on Thurs., May 12, 2022 the South Dakota Farmers Market Coalition heard a presentation from Rachelle Norberg of Gunvordahl Gunvordahl & Norberg on nonprofit status for farmers markets.

Markets can apply for nonprofit status using IRS form 1023 for 501c3 status or 1024 for 501c6 status.  If you would like to watch the recording, you can find it on the SDSPA YouTube channel.

This conversation is ongoing as our farmers markets learn from our collective experiences with this process. A valuable benefit of our coalition is this sharing of information and experience to help farmers markets across the state.

S.D. Farmers Market Coalition will gather pricing data again this summer for popular produce at farmers markets. If you would like help connecting with your local master gardeners to help with collecting the data, please contact Laura at SDSPA. Data will be collected during three timeframes: early season (June 1-13), mid-season (July 25-Aug 6), and late season (Aug 29-Sept 10).

The group discussed several additional topics of benefit to our farmers markets. There is hope that the new agritourism bill signed into law will reduce liability risk for farms and markets across the state, hopefully resulting in a corresponding reduction in insurance premiums. Time will tell. Information on the agritourism bill can be found here

We also familiarized ourselves with the Farmish app, which strives to connect communities with local food sources, similar to Craigslist.

Our next meeting will be Thurs. June 9, 2022 at noon CT/11 MT. If you are interested in being added to the contact list, please email SDSPA to receive the Zoom link.
