S.D. Local Foods Coalition ~ May 2022 Update

The May S.D. Local Foods Coalition meeting allowed for further networking, discussion on funding opportunities, planning for speakers & subcommittee work time.

The Coalition met on May 17, 2022 via Zoom, and started off with breakout time so that Coalition members could visit in smaller groups about their favorite summer local foods events.

In regards to fundraising, there are several grants & funding opportunities in the process of being applied for right now.  The Farm to School team is applying for $2,000 for ‘Bringing the Farm to School’ Ag Producer Training Stipends. Mini-grants that schools applied for to help with Farm to School programs will be awarded to many schools this fall, and the team hopes to hear back this summer regarding their USDA Farm to School grant application.

SDSPA has submitted a cooperative agreement with NRCS, which includes a request for funds which could be applied to the local foods conference.  SDSPA should hear back on their application by this summer.

The largest current funding request from the Coalition is a $250,000 request for the USDA Regional Food Systems Partnerships (RFSP).  DRA & SDSU will provide $110,000 matching funds for research on local foods & capacity building, and coalition development. The team should hear this summer if the grant was selected, and it would then run September 2022-2024.

Moving forward, the Coalition is also looking into hosting a speaker at each of the bi-monthly meetings, and suggestions were provided. These would typically run for about 20-30 minutes, followed by the regular meeting.

After a short break, the meeting reconvened with subcommittee work time, and then reporting back to the Coalition.

The next meeting will be Tues., July 19, 2022 at 2 p.m. Central/ 1 p.m. Mountain.
