S.D. Farmers Market Coalition ~ April 2022 Update

South Dakota Farmers Market Coalition meets on the second Thursday of each month at 11:00 mountain/12:00 central time.

In April, the group heard a presentation from Kami Semick about the online sales platform, Food4All.  One of the valuable features of Food4All is that it allows producers to manage multiple online platforms with a single inventory. If you want to watch the recording, you can find it on the SDSPA YouTube channel with this link.

South Dakota’s farmers markets are reminded to update their memberships with South Dakota Specialty Producers Association. Benefits of membership include monthly presentations and collaboration time with leaders from farmers markets across the state as well as access to resources from the Farmers Market Coalition.

The group discussed many topics in preparation for this summer’s market season, including choosing a S.D. Farmers Market Coalition logo, planning for a statewide celebration of Farmers Market Week (Aug. 7-13), and discussion of vendor insurance requirements and options. It was decided to continue last year’s produce pricing project. The challenge of market managers finding time to collect produce prices from markets will be addressed by collaborating with Master Gardeners to help gather the data. Contact Laura to connect with local master gardeners this summer.

The group continued our discussion of our experiences with accepting SNAP at farmers markets. SDSU Extension website now has guidance available for markets to obtain authorization and a processing device.

Many communities across South Dakota are limited in the availability of commercial kitchens for value-added vendors. The Deuel Community Kitchen has met this need in the Clear Lake area by creating specific guidelines to allow value-added producers to reserve their facility when not in use for the school. This arrangement has been working well for all involved for many years.

Our next meeting will be Thurs., May 12, and will include a speaker on Nonprofit/ 501c3 status. Contact Laura to receive the Zoom link.
