S.D. Local Foods Coalition ~ March 2022 Update
The S.D. Local Foods Coalition is made up of producers, consumers, and partners working to promote resilient, equitable local food systems, and food sovereignty for all. They meet bi-monthly via Zoom, with the next meeting scheduled for May 17th at 2 PM Central/1 PM Mountain.
The meeting held on March 15, 2022, recapped the four subcommittees- food security & sovereignty, state & federal programming, farm to school, and statewide local foods branding. All were invited to attend the Local Foods Conference planning meetings, which are held on the first Wednesday of the month via zoom.
In new business, leadership positions were selected with Eowyn Corral (DRA) and Kristine Lang (SDSU Extension) co-charing, Rachel Saum as the communications position, and Laura Kahler (SDSPA) as the membership & outreach position.
Discussion on the structure of the Coalition continued, reinstating the idea of six meetings per year with the subcommittees meeting in the alternating months. The annual January meeting will ideally be held in person if able.
Planning & discussion was also held on membership, operational structure, and grant opportunities, with these topics to continue to be a part of the next meeting.
The Farm to School subcommittee encourage districts to apply for a mini-grant through the Department of Ag & Natural Resources.
