S.D. Farmers Market Coalition ~ March 2022 Update

The SD Farmers Market Coalition met on March 10, 2022.  In old business, attendees were reminded to renew their membership with SDSPA, assure their information is up to date on the website, and to submit a SDSPA Membership Feature on their market to Chris, SDSPA Marketing, if that is something that interests them (an example can be seen here).

Rhoda Burrows, SDSU Extension, let us know that Master Gardeners will be able to assist with the pricing project this summer by collecting data.  Anna Barr updated us that the SDSU Farmers Market resource guide has been submitted for publication, and will be available soon.  The SDSPA guide, which has links to resources, can be found here: SDSPA Farmers Market Resource Guide.

Rachel Hagenbaugh and Anna Barr will start working on a logo for the coalition, with suggestions to incorporate fruits & vegetables spilling out of a basket, and a banner.

There was also discussion on looking into a statewide proclamation of National Farmers Market week, which will be Aug 7-13th. The group also discussed their goals & visions for the coalition, which include monthly meetings for support, mentorship & resource sharing, a desire for increased EBT/WIC/Double Up at Farmers Markets, price sharing and collaboration. From this, three individuals volunteered to take on a leadership role in the coalition- Barb Cromwell, Rachel Hagenbaugh and Bobbi Jo Horsted.

We also discussed future meeting topic ideas, such as food safety & laws, community kitchens, and questions for our May presenter on non-profit organizations.

Our April meeting, on April 14th at noon central/ 11 mountain, will introduce Food4All, and spend time in discussion on agreements, insurance options, & policies markets use.  Any vendor or manager willing to give a brief summary of what their market does & uses is asked to contact Laura, SDSPA Events Coordinator.
