SDSPA Promotes Specialty Producers at Lakota Food Summit 2022
SDSPA met with attendees at the 2nd Annual Lakota Food Summit in Rapid City on Feb. 15-16, 2022. At the conference, we met individuals doing new & exciting things in their communities to promote vegetable production, local foods, and food sovereignty.
SDSPA was able to get the word out to several individuals looking to start or grow community farmers markets, and explain about our organization & opportunities within it for specialty crop producers.

SDSPA seed guessing contest awarded a SDSPA membership and mushrooms, sauces, popcorn seeds & jelly from our SDSPA members.
We also had fun with attendees providing guesses as to the number of specialty crop seeds that we had filling a jar. The closest guess on Tuesday & Wednesday won a SDSPA membership and mushrooms, sauces, popcorn seeds & jelly from our SDSPA members.
This was the second Lakota Food Summit, and featured Sioux Chef Sean Sherman presenting on decolonized foods, and then collaborating with other Native chefs to provide taste testing. Tuesday & Wednesday were filled with speakers, including some SDSPA members, giving ideas on producing, marketing, supporting and developing networks for Native produced foods.
