S.D. Local Foods Coalition Dec. 2021 Update

The South Dakota Local Foods Coalition met on Nov. 16, 2021 to summarize what the subcommittees have been doing, and make plans as a group.

The Farm to School October meeting focused on describing where South Dakota currently is in Farm to School, and set ideas moving forward.  A timeline of events was created, and a video of the meeting is available. There is a lot of buzz around this group. They are scheduled to meet again on Dec. 14, 2021 at 2 p.m. Central.

The Branding committee will focus on educating and empowering groups who are having an impact on whole communities. They have been working with SDSU’s Local Foods Program to coordinated tours and workshops for groups.

The State & Federal Programming Committee will focus on working on expanding the Double Up Food Bucks & SNAP program. This group is going to meet with the S.D. Farmers Market Managers group in January to discuss the topic.

The Food Security, Sovereignty and Decentralization of Food Economies committee was not able to meet in October, but stated that it is a goal for them to meet before the end of the year. Many innovative and exciting programs are going on in this crucially important area.

A logo for the Coalition was discussed, with input from several members. The group will formally vote and finalize the logo at the January meeting.

The January Local Foods Coalition Meeting will be held Tues., Jan. 18 from 10 am-3pm (CT) at the SDSU Extension Regional Center in Pierre, S.D. (412 W Missouri Ave.).
