Member Feature: Bizzy Lizzy Flourless Bakery
A South Dakota business is redefining the bakery world.
Bizzy Lizzy Flourless Bakery was started in Michigan from a desire to get our kids to eat breakfast. It has since grown into a busy family business. When we first started out, we did five farmers markets a week, and delivered to local stores. We baked around other schedules, in shared kitchen space. It was crazy.
We were told by our bank that we were not a good loan risk because ‘you can’t bake without flour’, and a unique bakery would not make it in this economy. That was 2007, and I would love to go back to that banker and say, “I told you so!”
We ended up transforming part of our basement into an FDA regulated facility. Since we were working in a space that was only 12 feet by 12 feet, every-time we left we had to buy raw materials because we didn’t have any room for storage. We finally moved back to South Dakota in 2011 to our families’ farm. Here we built a great commercial kitchen with 16 feet of freezer and cooler space.
Our growth has been slow and steady, by choice. I have always been about quality over quantity. I wanted to make sure that we can always fill the needs of our clients who have been with us from the beginning. We are proud to say our original stores still order from us every week.
My parents, my mother-in-law, and my aunt, come to help my daughter Lizzy and me. Our family is amazing.
Today we ship to Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota as well as delivering to Brookings, Sioux Falls and Watertown. We are proud of our product line that includes a variety of muffins, cookies, mixes, bars, granolas, cupcakes and other treats.
