The South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA) has coordinated upcoming tours highlighting the specialty crop and local foods industry on Aug. 17, 2019.
The first tour will feature the production area at Thunder Valley CDC, 290 Empowerment Drive, Porcupine, SD from 12:30-2:30 p.m. MDT. Thunder Valley CDC will provide lunch prior to the tours at 11:30 a.m. Registration for lunch is required by Aug. 12.The second tour focuses on the high tunnel, greenhouse and production areas of the Oyate Teca Project, 39 Wapala Road, Kyle, SD from 3:00-5:00 p.m. MDT.
Thunder Valley Community Development Corporation (CDC) is a Lakota run grassroots organization focused on building a community as a catalyst to create systemic change on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Their food initiatives include a demonstration farm, community gardens and The Food Sovereignty Coalition, a reservation-wide collaboration working to create a more sustainable, prosperous and sovereign localized food system.
During the event Dianne Amiotte-Seidel, Thunder Valley CDC Food Sovereignty Director, will share the story of Thunder Valley CDC. Andrew Iron Shell will provide a tour of the agroforestry, egg and vegetable production areas.
The Oyate Teca Project, which means “Young People’s Project” in Lakota, works with children and their families promoting well-being through educational, cultural, recreational and health programs. One area of focus for adults is a year-long gardening class which teaches participants about financial planning, gardening, traditional food storage, and seasonal entrepreneurship. They sell the produce grown from their half-acre garden at a community farmers market.
Rose Fraser, Executive Director, will share the story of the program and provide a tour of the production areas. Jason Schoch, SDSU Extension AgrAbility program, will also present.
Local producers, chefs, consumers and organizations involved in local or specialty foods are encouraged to attend the free tours. Bring your family and enjoy an afternoon learning about how your food is produced.Participants may attend one or both sessions. You will be a guest on tour hosts’ property, so please use common sense and follow directions. You come at your own risk. Please note that chefs can receive 2.00 CEH’s for participating in the first tour and an additional 2.0 CEH’s for the 2nd tour.
The events are hosted by SDSPA in partnership with Thunder Valley CDC, SDSU Extension, the American Culinary Federation- Black Hills Chapter of Professional Chefs, Northern Plains Sustainable Ag Society, the South Dakota Department of Agriculture, the USDA and the SD Department of Tourism.
Additional tours featuring specialty crops, organic products and agritourism are scheduled next month. The next tours are Sept. 7 in Mission, SD showcasing a geothermal greenhouse and high tunnels.
