Prairie Berry Winery

Prairie Berry Winery

Pennington and Minnehaha counties

Owner/operators: The Vojta family

With a history that dates back to the late 19th century and spans two continents and five generations, Prairie Berry Winery has enjoyed rapid growth, gained a nationwide following, and won more than 750 awards, including a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor.

Father-daughter team Ralph and Sandi Vojta began commercial winemaking in 1998. Just the second winery in South Dakota to be awarded a commercial winery license, Prairie Berry started small. Sandi produced and bottled Prairie Berry's first commercial wine in 1999, in the basement of Ralph's Mobridge house. In Prairie Berry’s infancy, Ralph, Sandi, and Sandi’s husband, Matt Keck, did it all -- working long hours and putting most of the profits back into the business.

Over the next several years, Prairie Berry took off and prospered, moving from Mobridge to Rapid City and finally to its current location in Hill City. What started as a fledgling three-person winemaking operation grew to include a restaurant, tasting room, events room, and retail store.

Prairie Berry ventured into craft brewing in 2013, launching Miner Brewing Company alongside the winery. And one year later, expanding eastward, Prairie Berry opened a new location in Sioux Falls in the historic Eastbank area downtown. Prairie Berry East Bank includes a fermentation bar, kitchen, and marketplace.

Prairie Berry’s owners say proudly, “We emphasize freshness, local availability, seasonality, and simple preparations. These principles align with our family heritage and values, born from five generations of South Dakota family producing handcrafted beverages and foods in the region.”

Products: Products include wine, beer, preserves, sweets, cheese, candles, glassware, apparel, stationery, cookbooks
