Greenhouse, Gardens & Chef Tour in Rapid City, Aug 27

The South Dakota Specialty Producers Association has coordinated four upcoming tours featuring specialty crops, meats and value-added products. The next tours and programs are scheduled for Aug. 27 featuring produce production, greenhouses, and chef meal and presentation in the Rapid City region.

Local producers, chefs, consumers and organizations involved in local or specialty foods are encouraged to attend the free tours.

At 9:00 a.m. MT, the first tour will begin at Country Road Garden, 4190 Dyess Avenue in Rapid City. Following the tour at 10:00 a.m., Dr. Rhoda Burrows, SDSU Extension Horticulture Specialist, will give a presentation on ‘Food Safety for Small Scale Growers.’

Participants and organizers travel to Rock Valley Garden at 7575 N. Haines Avenue, Rapid City, for the second tour at 11:00 a.m.

At noon, Chef Jeff Slathar of Colonial House Restaurant will prepare lunch with ingredients provided by the tour hosts. Only those that want to eat lunch need to register. Payment for lunch is approximately $10 and will be collected the day of the event. Please contact Cory T. ( no later than Aug. 25 to register for lunch.

At 3:00 PM (NEW ADDITION) Chris & Mikayla Graham at 9469 Deerview Rd, Piedmont, SD, will present their solar powered water harvesting system, which collects water off their greenhouse for vineyard irrigation. GenPro, solar system installers will be on hand for Q&A time. Refreshments will be served. 

From Rock Valley Gardens turn north on MC9/Haines Ave. and continue for 5 miles until the intersection of Elk Creek Rd. Turn west onto Elk Creek and continue for 6 miles. Turn north on Deerview Rd and follow the road around approximately 2.5 miles. The Graham’s place is on the left/south through two concrete pillars.

This event is sponsored by South Dakota Specialty Producers Association in partnership with the American Culinary Federation- Black Hills Chapter of Professional Chefs, SDSU Extension, South Dakota Department of Agriculture, Northern Plains Sustainable Ag Society and USDA.

Please note that chefs can receive 2.00 CEH’s for participating in the tour. Master Gardeners can receive Continuing Education credits for participating in tours and volunteer hours for helping with tours. Contact Cory T. ( if you wish to participate.

Two additional tours are scheduled Sept. 9. Save the date for the ‘Milling Organic Grains’ tour at Dakota Earth Bakery in Alcester, SD and a ‘Cover Crop and High Tunnel Fruit Production’ tour at the SDSU Southeast Research Station near Beresford, SD.
